When restoring anything, it is best to evaluate what changes should be made based on what the object is telling you. This can be done by recognizing the use of different materials such as nails, wood, or a style change. Through research, I try to be as accurate as possible. This is the academic approach. The human approach is to make it better than it was originally. We all have our likes and dislikes, whether it be a refinished look or the "grungy" look.

I often wonder what reaction the cabinet maker would have if he or she could see the attention their creations receive today. I'm sure they would be honored and puzzled to see their creation displayed as an "object of art" while at the same time being propped up with a brick to replace a missing foot.
